Sedentary patients should be encouraged to adopt constipation remedies like exercise and consuming adequate fluids. Since colonic motor activity is most active after waking and after a meal, the optimal time for a bowel movement is in the morning, after breakfast. More specific therapy depends on the type of constipation.Slow-transit constipation problem is best treated at present with a combination of laxatives or prokinetic drugs. A saline laxative, such as magnesium hydroxide (1 to 2 tbsp once or twice a day), is preferable. In refractory cases, a half to 1 glassful of magnesium citrate or an emollient laxative, such as docusate sodium, may be effective.
